Impact Beyond The Track

Aniya Hill

As student-athletes, we’re often seen as individuals who are only on campus to play sports and attend classes.

But that couldn’t be further from the truth.

During my time on the track and field team at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, I prioritized making an impact beyond the track.

My goal is to be an example and inspiration for other student-athletes—to show them that they have a voice on campus and can make a difference in whatever they pursue.

I want to encourage my peers to get involved, join organizations, and become part of something bigger than themselves.

Even as a college freshman, I strive to be a representative and role model not just for younger student-athletes, but for athletes of all classifications.

The Search for Involvement

The summer before I started college, I already knew I had a passion for marketing and wanted to build my career in that field.

I also knew that, as a student-athlete, my schedule would be packed—so I created a game plan.

I explored the campus website, researched organizations I could join, and looked for internships available to freshmen.

From the moment I stepped onto campus, I was focused on finding ways to get involved.

I wanted to make the most of my time in college because I knew four years could go by fast.

And I genuinely believe college is one of the most pivotal places that can shape or break your career.

I made it a point to take advantage of the resources around me and begin networking early to give myself a head start in the marketing world.

Thankfully, I secured an internship during my first semester as a Ragin’ Sports Marketing Intern, which gave me valuable experience and connected directly to my goals.

Overcoming Challenges

We all know how demanding a student-athlete's life can be—between practices, games, workouts, and classes, time is tight.

This made joining organizations especially challenging.

Most of the time, meetings would conflict with practices or class schedules.

But I found a way.

I joined the Student-Athlete Athletic Association, the Black Student Athletic Association, Chi Kappa Alpha Ministry, and the Ragin Marketing Association, where I currently serve as Vice President of Marketing.

I also took part in the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Pageant, despite not being sure I’d have time—and ended up winning.

If something is truly important to you, I believe you’ll find a way to make time.

Achievements like these are more than personal wins—they prove that student-athletes can thrive beyond their sport.

And I hope they inspire others to pursue their passions, too.

The Impact on My Character

Joining multiple organizations as a freshman has already had a significant impact on how I’m shaping my college experience—and my future.

Through countless networking opportunities, I’ve been able to connect with people both on and off campus.

From internships to local NIL deals, I’ve formed connections that will be key in launching my career in marketing.

More than that, getting involved has helped shape the woman I’m becoming.

I’ve developed stronger leadership and communication skills, learned to collaborate more effectively with teammates, and grown more confident in speaking up—whether on the field or in a meeting.

Aspirations for the Future

I’m currently running for Student-Athlete Secretary in our Student Government Association.

If elected, I want to serve as a voice and advocate for student-athletes—showing them that they can be active on campus, get involved in organizations, and defy the stereotypes placed on us.

People might not expect a track athlete also to be a pageant queen or a student government representative—but I’m here to challenge that.

The limitations people place on us are just barriers waiting to be broken.

As a freshman, no one would have expected me to join multiple organizations or participate in various activities, but that’s exactly why I want to show other student-athletes what’s possible.

If I can inspire even one of my peers to step outside their comfort zone, speak up, and make an impact, then every meeting, every late night, and every step of this journey will be worth it.
